What is Golden Week?
The end of April through around May 5, 6 is called Golden Week (GW) in Japan. There are many national holidays during this period, and it's one of the busiest travel seasons in Japan.
The national holidays making up the Golden Week are:
April 29th Showa Day (Showa no hi)
April 29 is the birthday of former Emperor Showa, who died in the year 1989.
May 3rd Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpo Kinenbi)
On this day in 1947, the new post war constitution was put into effect.
May 4th Greenery Day (Midori no hi)
The day is dedicated to the environment and nature.
Families pray for the health and future success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai dolls, both symbolizing strength, power and success in life.
In 2013, weekends are placed in a way to create two separate holidays of three and four days.
Many attractive events and festivals are planned across the country.
Most areas have something going on. In Tokyo, check out the lists below in 2013!
