The 13th NeedsArch (NA) "One Day Noh Theater Workshop and Group Interview" was held on June 24, 2017 in Umewaka Nohgaku Gakuin Kaikan (Nakano).

  To hear your opinion and suggestion for how we spread "Noh" to foreign nationals (to the world).
  Your opinion will be utilized to plan a new Noh workshop in order to further enhance foreign tourists' 
  attracting of Japanese culture which add more values & attractiveness to their visit.

  • Experience singing, chanting and dancing in the Noh theater classroom (80 mins)
  • Experience walking on the Noh Stage (10 mins)

All testers rated and reviewed One Day Noh Theater Workshop basically on the following;
  • Ideas and suggestions how we promote "Noh" to foreigners
  • Value of the workshop (e.g. contents, price, venue, time and so on)

YOKO LAYER - After graduating from high school in Japan, Yoko Layer modeled and acted for several magazines, television and theater companies. She later graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University and then began to study the Stanislavsky system from Russian director Leonid Anisimov. She has since performed with the Tokyo Novyi Repertory Company in Chekhov’s "The Cherry Orchard", "The Seagull" and Gorky’s "The Lower Depths".

In 2004, she began studying Noh as an apprentice on the professional track with the Umewaka Rokuro branch of the Kanze school. Later she began to spend time in Seattle with her husband Paul where they co-founded the Seattle Novyi Theatre Company and performed "The Seagull" and "Uncle Vanya" in repertory, and later "The Proposal" in the International Chekhov Festival in Tokyo. In 2007 she performed with Theatre Nohgaku in the chorus of "Crazy Jane" for TN’s Pacific Northwest tour. In 2010 she became a shihan (instructor) in the Kanze school of noh.

In 2012 she performed "Hagoromo"as a leading role the first time. Now she is performing in Noh theater, and she is teaching Noh theater to beginner students at culture centers and in private classes.

The 9th NeedsArch (NA) "Free Craftwork Experiences (Edo Kiriko, Katazome, and Kumihimo) by TOKYO Teshigoto" was held in October and November 2016 in Tokyu Plaza Ginza.

Purpose of the interview: For Japanese traditional crafts (souvenir) development and marketing

TOKYO Teshigoto and LIVES Inc. will sell and market research Japanese souvenirs to foreign tourists and residents  
so they have a group interview to get some information about souvenir, shopping, tour plan in Japan and so on.

  • Ideas and suggestions how we sell Japanese crafts to foreigners
  • Value of the crafts (e.g. design, price, size, and improvement points)

"TOKYO Teshigoto" - is an initiative that conveys to Japan and the world the exquisiteness of the sophisticated handworks or "teshigoto" of the masters known as the "Takumi", by shedding light on their traditional skills. In addition to spreading the Edo aesthetics of "iki" and "inase", and appealing the outstanding everyday functionalities of their crafts, the Takumi are challenging new types of crafts brimming with Tokyo sensations so more people can enrich their lifestyles with traditional crafts.



1. Edo Kiriko "江戸切子" workshop and group interview on October 8th, 2016

6 ICT members joined the Free Craftwork Experience (Edo Kiriko) on Oct 8. One by one, they made a simple pattern using a glass-cut machine on a glass plate, then brought it home as a souvenir!
After the experience, we had talked about Japanese traditional crafts in the group interview.

NeedsArch Report 8: Ozu Washi Making, Museum Tour, and Group Interview

The 8th NeedsArch (NA) "Ozu Washi Making, Museum Tour, and Group Interview" was held on Saturday, September 24th 2016 in Nihonabshi. 
It might have been a bit challenging to make a sheet of Washi paper using a traditional bamboo mat, but it was good that everyone succeeded at the end!
     
The purpose of group interview is For product (souvenir) development.
Cool Japan Souvenir Society (CJSS) will introduce Japanese souvenirs and plan tour guides for foreign tourists visiting Japan so they have a group interview to get some information about souvenir, shopping, tour plan in Japan and so on.

NeedsArch Report 6: Kanazawa Pre-Monitor Tour

The 6th NeedsArch (NA) "Kanazawa Pre-Monitor Tour" was held on Sat-Sun, April 16-17th 2016 at Kanazawa.         

The purpose of pre-monitor our is that CREA voyage
 will plan once-in-a-lifetime experience VIP tours visiting Sake Brewery, best traditional craft companies (e.g. Kutani-yaki, Kaganui), Ryotei and more especially for Westerners, so the company the feedback (e.g. value of sightseeing spots, schedule, Taxi transport, an English-speaking guide, the level of service and attractions) to make a commercial tour better. We elicited informative ideas and valuable comments from travelers to offer a exclusive tour in the near future.

NeedsArch travelers           : 1 woman from USA and 2 women from Japan

All travelers did as follows;
  • Questionnaires (each sightseeing spots)
  • Group interview (60 mins~/per day)
All travelers rated and reviewed the tour basically on the following;
  • Feedback the tour (e.g. hands-on activity ◎)
  • Ideas for the tour (e.g. suggestion: how to buy souvenirs)
  • Value of the tour (e.g. simultaneous translator timing)

NeedsArch Report 7: Japanese Kabuki Face Mask Testing and Group Interview

The 7th NeedsArch (NA) "Japanese Kabuki Face Mask Testing and Group Interview" was held on Monday, April 4th 2016 at Hanzomon.         

The purpose of group interview is that Isshin-do-honpo company will make a new brochure for producing a new face mask, which is given out at a big international conference this May so the company and designer need some information (e.g. value of the face mask, package design, skin care, Japanese souvenir and so on) and elicit fresh ideas and valuable comments from testers for selling face masks in USA and Europe in the near future.

NeedsArch Product Testers : 4 women from USA, UK and Germany

All testers did as follows;
  • Enjoy applying Kabuki face mask (20 mins)
  • Group interview (60 mins)
All testers rated and reviewed this product basically on the following;

  • Ideas for global sales
  • Value of the product and package design (contents)

* Isshin-do Company from Tokyo originally sold traditional Japanese confectionery. Face masks printed with the Kabuki and a variety of patterns are available at stores and online. Of course they are rich in ingredients to make your skin more beautiful. NeedsArch Report 5: Hijab Testing, Interview and Japanese Traditional Textile Dyeing Workshop

The 5th NeedsArch (NA) "Hijab Testing, Interview and Japanese Traditional Textile Dyeing Workshop" was held on Saturday, January 30th 2016 at Tomita Somekogei in Waseda (Shinjuku ward).         

The purpose of this interview is that Tomita Somekogei company will export silk scarves which are all handmade and produced in Japan to Asia (especially Malaysia and Indonesia) so the producer, Culture Generation Japan, need some information (e.g. design, color, quality, price and so on) and elicit fresh ideas and opinions from testers for marketing and building world-class branding!

NeedsArch Product Testers : 4 Muslim women using Hijab from 3 countries 


All testers did as follows;
  • Enjoy hands-on acitivity creating your own original silk wrapping cloth "fukusa (袱紗)"
  • Lecture about the history of dyeing and textiles in Tokyo (Edo Komon and Sarasa) by Mr. Tomita
  • Atelier tour learning the process of dyeing and technique
All testers rated and reviewed this new groundbreaking product basically on the following:

  • Value of the product

*Tomita Somekogei is one of the dyeing companies representing Shinjuku, and takes on a challenge not only depending on their business producing Kimono but creating new brands, which revitalized other dyeing companies in Shinjuku based on a success case Tomita Somekogei. NeedsArch Report 4: MASKING COLOR EVENT

The 4th NeedsArch (NA) "MASKING COLOR EVENT" was held on Saturday, October 17th 2015 at CLUB PETU in Harajuku.
 
The purpose of this event to export Masking Color, which is a strippable water-based paint that can be peeled off after painting and re-adhered to flat surfaces such as walls or glass, to abroad and elicit fresh ideas and opinions from testers for marketing and building world-class branding!   

Japanese company (client) :  Taiyo Toryo Co., Ltd. (太洋塗料株式会社)
NeedsArch Product Testers :  16 participants from 12 countries 

The Participants did as follows;
  • Created your own original ornaments and decorations for Halloween and Christmas
  • Experienced peeling off after painting (at home)
  • Drew pictures, characters and seasonal decorations on mirror, tables and chairs
All product testers rated and reviewed this new groundbreaking product basically on the following:
  • Ease of use
  • Ideas for global sales
  • Value of the product
All participants from USA, Germany, France, England, Canada, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Indonesia, China, Korea and Myanmar had fun in thier own ways with Masking Color and enjoyed a Saturday afternoon creating their original ornaments for Halloween and Christmas! We ICT staff interviewed all testers after workshop. We hope all participants enjoyed peeling off after drying at home!

*”Masking Color” is one of the select products in More Than Project 2015 (Japan Brand Development Assistance Program) which is an initiative of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). NeedsArch Report 3: Mashiko Pottery Teaware Competiton by Sayamacha Branding Project

The 3rd NeedsArch (NA) "Mashiko Pottery Teaware Competiton by Sayamacha Branding Project" has been done on February 28th Saturday 2015 at CLUB PETU in Harajuku.
 
The purpose of competiton was to export beautiful designed teawares, Mashiko-yaki potteries (急須), which created by young pottery artists in Mashiko (Tochigi) to USA, and sell new teawares on oversea markets with Saymacha (狭山茶) for building world-class branding!   

Japanese company (client) :  Sayamacha Branding Project
NeedsArch Product Testers :  14 participants from different countries 

The Participants did as follows;
  • Learning steeping method for Japanese tea and Mashiko-yaki from short presentation
  • Ranking for teawares from No.1 to No.3 (visual evaluation)
  • Evaluation for teawares which one is the best after brewing Sayamacha (overall evaluation)
All participants from USA, Italy, Turkey, Uzbekistan, China, Philippines, Australia and more had a special experience how to brew Japanese tea and enjoyed a Saturday afternoon having a tea party with Japanese snacks. We hope participants got a deeper understanding of Japanese "Tea" and "Mashiko-yaki" !!
