The 13th NeedsArch (NA) "One Day Noh Theater Workshop and Group Interview" was held on June 24, 2017 in Umewaka Nohgaku Gakuin Kaikan (Nakano). --------------------------------------------------------- Purpose of the event: To hear your opinion and suggestion for how we spread "Noh" to foreign nationals (to the world). Your opinion will be utilized to plan a new Noh workshop in order to further enhance foreign tourists' attracting of Japanese culture which add more values & attractiveness to their visit. YOKO LAYER - After graduating from high school in Japan, Yoko Layer modeled and acted for several magazines, television and theater companies. She later graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University and then began to study the Stanislavsky system from Russian director Leonid Anisimov. She has since performed with the Tokyo Novyi Repertory Company in Chekhov’s "The Cherry Orchard", "The Seagull" and Gorky’s "The Lower Depths". In 2004, she began studying Noh as an apprentice on the professional track with the Umewaka Rokuro branch of the Kanze school. Later she began to spend time in Seattle with her husband Paul where they co-founded the Seattle Novyi Theatre Company and performed "The Seagull" and "Uncle Vanya" in repertory, and later "The Proposal" in the International Chekhov Festival in Tokyo. In 2007 she performed with Theatre Nohgaku in the chorus of "Crazy Jane" for TN’s Pacific Northwest tour. In 2010 she became a shihan (instructor) in the Kanze school of noh. In 2012 she performed "Hagoromo"as a leading role the first time. Now she is performing in Noh theater, and she is teaching Noh theater to beginner students at culture centers and in private classes. |

The 9th NeedsArch (NA) "Free Craftwork Experiences (Edo Kiriko, Katazome, and Kumihimo) by TOKYO Teshigoto" was held in October and November 2016 in Tokyu Plaza Ginza. --------------------------------------------------------- Purpose of the interview: For Japanese traditional crafts (souvenir) development and marketing TOKYO Teshigoto and LIVES Inc. will sell and market research Japanese souvenirs to foreign tourists and residents so they have a group interview to get some information about souvenir, shopping, tour plan in Japan and so on. In addition to spreading the Edo aesthetics of "iki" and "inase", and appealing the outstanding everyday functionalities of their crafts, the Takumi are challenging new types of crafts brimming with Tokyo sensations so more people can enrich their lifestyles with traditional crafts. 1. Edo Kiriko "江戸切子" workshop and group interview on October 8th, 2016 6 ICT members joined the Free Craftwork Experience (Edo Kiriko) on Oct 8. One by one, they made a simple pattern using a glass-cut machine on a glass plate, then brought it home as a souvenir! It might have been a bit challenging to make a sheet of Washi paper using a traditional bamboo mat, but it was good that everyone succeeded at the end! The 7th NeedsArch (NA) "Japanese Kabuki Face Mask Testing and Group Interview" was held on Monday, April 4th 2016 at Hanzomon. The purpose of group interview is that Isshin-do-honpo company will make a new brochure for producing a new face mask, which is given out at a big international conference this May so the company and designer need some information (e.g. value of the face mask, package design, skin care, Japanese souvenir and so on) and elicit fresh ideas and valuable comments from testers for selling face masks in USA and Europe in the near future.
