【学LEARN】Try and Experience Hand printing "Edo-Sarasa", dyeing colorful table mat
::::: Workshop Report on March 7th, 2015 ::::: On Saturday April 26, ICT had a dyeing workshop at “Futaba-en (二葉苑)”, where is one of the historical dyeing shops in Ochiai (Shinjuku area), where dyeing culture has developed since Edo era. Seven participants from China, Australia and Philippines enjoyed dyeing their table mats 7 colors using 15 different paper patterns “Katagami” to hand print Edo-sarasa. All steps we experienced are the same as dyeing Kimono and Kimono belt (Obi), so participants moved a brush "Hake" gently and soft, and checked the color depth like an artisan. *The technique of the artisan in using the stencils and carefully dying with a brush is what gives the clothing its depth. After dyeing experience, we moved to a steaming room and steamed mats at 100℃. Mr. Ogawa guided us his dyeing factory and explained the dyeing steps and dye during steaming. A big thank you for Mr. Ogawa for all the preparation and details explanations for the history of dyed clothing. And we would also appreciate to all participants who attended the workshop. Hope you enjoyed a great Saturday afternoon for creating original mats. ICT is planning for differnet workhops at Futabaen again! Many thanks for your time and energy. I really enjoyed meeting each and one of you, and look forward to seeing you at our other events as well! Written by Tsubasa Kato (Jojo) |
【学LEARN】"Buddhism NOW from Jesse (American)"
::::: Workshop Report on March 28th, 2015 :::::
We moved to the beautiful main hall of the temple, and appreciated Buddhist Ritual Performance (For World Peace) including the Heart Sutra (Traditional Drum Accompaniment) 般若心経(太鼓)after brief introduction to Buddhist ritual. Jesse simply explained point by point during the performance. The participants were amazed by how many Buddhist priests in Japan (estimated 300,000 priests, which roughly the same number of active and reserve personal in the Japanese Self-Defence Forces).
*The next workshop by Jesse will be held around June! Don’t miss a chance to enjoy Jesse’s talks and meditation.

【学LEARN:ZEN01】ZEN AWAKENING 1: WHAT IS ZEN "禅"?
::::: Workshop Report on March 7th, 2015 :::::
On March 7th, 18 participants gathered at 陽岳寺(Yogakuji)located in Fukagawa, which is one of the historical areas in Tokyo, and attended ZEN workshop to learn about “What is ZEN (禅)” and have a Zazen (Zen meditation) experience.
In introduction, Priest 法純 (Hojun) san talked about our habits and thoughts which we think/do something all the time; what we have to do next, oh we update a picture on Facebook and reply messages….what we should do next repeatedly. We don’t have any time paying attention a “Present”, so we just tried to stop thinking, and participants are focus on feeling NOW with open mind in Zazen time (I couldn’t stop thinking even 10 minutes though).
Participants were
noticed by his talks how much we produced a cause of troubles by ourselves. It
was a meaningful opportunity to rethink our attitude/life how we spend
every day more relaxed not always thinking about “I” but others (e.g. not
judging the people but contribute to others).
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Priest 法純 (Hojun) for his guidance and explanation on the Zazen (Zen meditation), and to Priest Mukai san for using a beautiful temple with all preparations for us! And also a big thank-you to all guests who joined the very first Zazen workshop! We had a great relaxing afternoon with each of you, and look forward to seeing you at next events!
* ZEN AWAKENING 2 by Hojun will be held around May or June! Don’t miss it!

【学LEARN:WS01】Porcelain Art Class
::::: Workshop Report on February 20th, 2015::::: On February
20th, 2015, WaNavi Japan and ICT held a Porcelain Art Class at
Aoyama omen’s Plaza.
It was a first time for all participants from Indonesia, USA and Japan to join a porcelain class, but they enjoyed a weekday morning creating their original porcelains.
With a brief instruction from a porcelain art teacher, Ms. Mami, participants started cutting a decal sheet into small pieces and decorating cups and plate for 2 hours with concentration. They got the knacks quickly thanks to Mami’s great advice! Each porcelain of them decorated with cherry blossoms and cranes are a big difference reflecting personalities of each members. We are looking forward to what it’s like and how porcelains vary in color after burning at 800℃.
Mami san,
thank you very much for arranging the workshop with all preparations and giving
us a super amazing opportunity. We also thank all the guests who participated
for making the workshop more special! We had a great time with each of you, and look forward to seeing you at next events! Written by Jojo |
