Japanese Tea Experience ~ Learn the basic! How to brew Japanese tea ~
When you’re asked “Would you like some tea?” what kind of tea comes to your mind? If you’re Japanese, maybe Green tea popped up. If you’re British, perhaps imagined red tea.
12th April, we had an ICT workshop one brewing Japanese tea ourselves. Although Japanese green tea is famous and well drunk by many Japanese, few of us can actually brew these days. Being one of Japanese, I joined with more than 20 guests.
Firstly, we had introduction on how tea leaves. Did you know while there’s variety of tea whole world, tea is made from one plant called “Camellia sinensis”. The reason for multiple tastes is hidden in “brewing” process.
Afterwards, we actually brewed Sencha by ourselves. How sensitive tea brewing is, appropriate temperature, time for waiting until tea leaves blend with hot water and order of pouring tea to each cup…
You have to be “at the moment” to brew good tea.
From this workshop, I found commonality of in Japanese cultures which is “Be present”. Thinking of Tea, Zen, Flower arrangement… you have to be physically there, or you would fail. Modern era is so busy every day that you may find difficult to concentrate on NOW (e.g. Hangover, Due dates for something, concerns, weekend plans…etc) Brewing tea, focusing on brewing procedure would help you to “Be present”.
Thank you very much Haruna san, Kahori san for holding this memorable lectures with all preparation. It must have been good experience, to touch the deep world of tea.
If you are interested in knowing further about tea, we have more tea events coming. Please make sure to check our ICT page!
