Spinning Colorful Yarn and Handmade Christmas Ornaments!

Six of our regular members got together at Allincco Office in Shibuya. Our special instructor, Reiko Usuda, introduced us spinning in details with some slides and videos (e.g. history, sheep, the process fibers become clothing, spinning tools and much more) in her presentation. All of us didn’t know how to use a hand spindle even what it used for.

After her explanations, we started spinning yarn together. First, we touched different kinds of wools which were soft, curly, and a long length….and picked up 4, 5 favorite fibers from a variety of colorful yarns (e.g. Merino, Corriedale, Jacob, Gotland, Alpaca and more). And the, we held a spindle in our right hand and spun clockwise to add fibers. We practiced it many times and tried to keep a same in width and thickness, but it took time to master well. So we enjoyed making uneven yarns!

The most difficult parts were to mix colors with balance and also to twist yarns without snapping. We all were beginners for spinning, so struggled from the start to entangle fibers, but enjoyed the whole process even some hard parts! Finally, we made lovely Christmas ornaments with colorful yarns we spun just ourselves!

Reiko gave us handout, which we can find favorite craft/yarn shops where you can get high quality materials (made in Japan) of crafts at the end!

Thank you so much for all participants, and a big thank you to Reiko Usuda!!
