The Roots of Japan ~ Nohgaku and Japanese Culture ~

April 5th (Sat), we went to 梅若能楽学院会館 (Umewaka Noh Gaku Kaikan) for 3 hour “ (Noh) Workshop”. With 15 participants, we had lecture behind Noh stage, how to play and deep philosophy of Noh.

Although Noh has long history in Japan, very few Japanese know what exactly “Noh” is. Have you watched Noh play, or even heard something about Noh? If you haven’t, don’t worry because only 1% of Japanese these days watch Noh.

Our teacher for the workshop was 怜以野 陽子さん (Mrs. Yoko Layer). She joined the Umewaka Noh family at the age of 30. She had a huge shock watching the play of Rokurou Umewaka, who is the current master of Umewaka family.

The lecture started from basics of Noh. Items used, walking with 摺足 (suri ashi),  use of Japanese fan, how to sing like Noh chorus... As practice, we tried to walk without dropping the fan put on your head (Please see the picture of the scene!)

Afterwards, we learned about Noh stage. Did you know why usually pine is drawn on the wall? It's because pines are evergreen. If you draw cherry blossoms even though they are popular, you can play only spring story on the stage. We also heard that Noh players have to do "切腹 (Harakiri)" if they make even one mistake on the stage...

At the end, we had lecture on the philosophy of Noh. Started more than 600 years ago, in Namboku era, Noh has been placing much value on passing to next generations. Therefore, Noh players welcome people sharing, teaching about Noh or joining to their world. Yoko-san has also mentioned that Umewaka famiy's traditional but strong and warm bond. We had so many questions even after the lecture. Thank you Yoko-san for enjoying and fun lectures!

We would also like to appreciate all the guests joined during their weekend. Hope you enjoyed very much and pass on this tradition to next generation according to the philosophy of Noh!

P.S. The next play (Noh performance) of Yoko-san is on 15th June. If you are interested in experiencing the world of Noh, please let us know. We may have ICT workshop for this with sufficient guests!
