ICT Workshop 12: Japanese Tea Experience 2
~ Japanese Tea Blind Tasting Game ~

Date

Saturday, May 24th

Event Details:  Fascinating Points

Japanese Tea Blind Tasting Game! Identify the type of tea by drinking water-brewed Japanese teas!

Do you know Tocha-kai or Cha-Kabuki - a blind tea tasting game? This game was very popular about 700 years ago, but eventually it was banned as it became like a gamble. Nowadays, Tocha-kai is held all over Japan for the people in tea business. Participants identify which area the tea is produced just by tasting the brewed tea. It is very difficult because the difference is subtle. For ICT event, we make the game easier so that everyone can enjoy! You will identify various types of water-brewed Japanese tea, such as Sencha (leaf part of Japanese green tea), Genmaicha (Sencha with roasted brown rice), and so on.

Because the operation of the game requires many people, we will split the 20 participants into two groups – Group A and Group B. First, 10 people in Group A are the players, and 10 people in Group B are the operation team. Later the role is switched.

It is fun to taste various teas carefully and find out the differences by tea types – also, once you know how to operate the game, you can hold your own Tocha-kai party!

◆ What is Tocha – blind tea tasting game?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tocha_(game)

◆ What is Japanese tea?

Literally it means, “Any tea produced in Japan”. However, usually “Japanese tea (Nihon-cha)” means Sencha because Sencha (regular green tea) accounts for about 80% of the tea production in Japan.
